There are 2 key ingredients essential to getting these kinds of results: the first is passion for motor racing, the second is to have a strategy to learn the skills and the ropes of the motor racing game; to get from amateur to professional and follow the path of least resistance. Driver Coaching Has Been An Overlooked Weapon For Success
The 7 Essential Key Areas that you need to master to become the fastest driver in your class are:
Step One: Racing Strategies 1. Plan your Outcome for the Race SeasonIs it better to win an individual race or the entire championship? In 5 years time are you or anybody else going to care about how many races you have won? A racing career is never about the race you are currently driving. Your racing strategy should always be geared to the winning of the overall championship - which may mean sometimes you benefit from not attempting to come in first place in a particular, individual race. To win a championship you need to have found the advantage. In essence you need to have strategies and techniques that no one else is using on the racetrack. This can be attained by:
2. Plan your ImprovementsMake sure each time you get out of the car that you have learnt something new. You must always be moving forward. If you plateau for too long without new learning's, your performance will deteriorate. To consistently evolve as a driver you must 'plan your improvement'. It should be your goal to turn up to each race meeting with a new level of mental and physical fitness. You also should plan to master a new skill or have acquired more knowledge coming into each new event. At this stage of your planning, map out the year ahead.
3. Race Day StrategiesThe plan is to be focused, positive, consistent and mentally & physically sharp. The strategy is this:
The diary includes:
Step Two – Testing and Qualifying Probably one of the biggest mistakes that drivers make is getting their car out on the track for testing and then trying to show off what they can do! The testing phase is the best time to learn strategies that will reduce your lap times and help you consistently win races. In testing a driver should put their self into uncomfortable situations and attempt to perform techniques that he or she hasn't done before. It doesn't mean to just drive the car harder or faster through a corner. It means to push the boundaries a little and try a different steering wheel or braking technique. Before you even get on the track, you should have a "testing plan":
When you collect the right information during your testing phase, you can get the top positions during your qualifying laps. When you have the information, doing your qualifying lap is a lot like checking off the boxes of a to-do list - everything falls into place:
You know that if you hit your brake markers exactly on, and the turning points exactly right, you will have your best lap times. So qualifying in the top positions depends on completing the testing process as accurately and completely as you can - and on timing it all right! When the testing phase is completed - you actually have everything your brain needs to drive the car unconsciously. Your goal is to drive the car around the track without having to think about it, since driving consciously requires more time for the thought processes than driving unconsciously. This is a major difference between drivers who are consistently winning races and the other 99% who are not! Did you know that the human brain can't tell the difference between effective visualizing and actually physically doing something? So if you've visualized driving around the track 100 laps before you actually get out there - your brain computes that as “I've driven this track 100 laps already”. Getting to this stage is your goal because suddenly you can concentrate on checking off all of your tasks from your “to-do list”, and concentrate less on the physical act of driving a race. Important for Qualifying:
Step Three – Mind Fitness and Mental Attitude Regardless of the sports people participate in, there has always been a focus on mental attitude. There has rarely been a discussion of the importance of having a fit mind. In racing, your body and mind are related and if you're looking to win - you need to be both mentally and physically fit and healthy. Having a fit mind is seriously important. When you are racing, you need to have complete concentration for a minimum of 20 to 40 minutes at a time. If you lose focus even for a second, you could find your car off the race line or even worse, crashing out of the race. There are actual exercises that strengthen the mind in the same way that physical exercise strengthens the body. Exercising your mind for racing involves overloading your brain to see how you react to the increasing information coming at you, over a period of 20 minutes or more. It's a lot like being on the track. Your mind needs to switch into a learning and relaxed state when you're driving. You also have to be able to see more than what's directly in front of you - in other words, as you're focused on bringing the car around the track without hitting anything, you also have to know what's happening in front of you, next to and behind you. You need to hear what's going on with the car as you're driving, and feel what's happening as well. Develop a mind training system that allows you to:
Step Four – Physical Fitness Physical fitness for racecar drivers is essential. Firstly, your heart rate will exceed what it normally is because of the stress on your mind and body during a race. It is important that you work on cardiovascular fitness, as well as general strength building of your muscles. The more physically fit you are:
Exercises:
Step Five – Sponsorship, PR and Marketing: Why Would A Company Sponsor You for Your Endorsement? Most drivers go into racing and then start looking for a sponsor. They're thinking about what the client sponsor can do for them and how much money they can get by being sponsored. If you're doing this - you're going about your marketing completely wrong! Here's how you need to look at marketing yourself:
Most businesses can't afford to shell out $100,000 or $200,000 to sponsor a racecar. The marketing budget of most companies is only about 3% of their expenses. You have to be willing to think outside the box - and how you can work with a sponsor to help them while still gaining the funds you need to run your car. For example, there was a driver who was sponsored by Jack Daniels. The company didn't write the driver checks to put the Jack Daniel's logo on the racecar; instead, the company provided clothing and other items with the Jack Daniel's logo on it to the driver at wholesale cost. When the driver sold those items to fans, he got to keep the difference between the wholesale price and the retail price he was selling the items for. Jack Daniel's got ongoing exposure from everyone who purchased and then wore the clothing with their logo on it.
The more famous you are as a driver, the more attention you can attract from potential sponsors. If you can get yourself on talk shows, in newspapers and other media - you'll have a better opportunity of getting sponsored. Marketing is a big part of being a professional racecar driver. Step Six – Driver Management (The Business of Driving) If you haven't figured it out by now, you should know that there is far more to being a racecar driver that wins races than just being able to drive fast! Becoming a professional racecar driver takes each of the five steps and techniques mentioned above; and it also means you are running your own business. As with any business, you have to have some sort of plan and goals in place - so that you Many drivers, for example, will set out to race in the hardest class they can get into. They say that they gain a lot more experience losing in a race against top drivers than they do from winning in a lower class race. But here's the thing: You need to learn how to win before you can establish a driving career.
It doesn't matter how fast you drive if you don't have the 6 steps in place to put you at the front of the pack. Successful driving is all in the details. Step Seven - Team Dynamics Team dynamics is a hugely important subject and one that is often overlooked by drivers. The areas to consider are:
One of the biggest challenges that drivers face is excelling in a team environment. Many drivers prefer to be solely focused on their own car and performance and find it difficult when they are expected to be on friendly terms with teammates. Racing is serious and every driver wants to win. How are you supposed to deal with a team environment and having to share your race secrets and data?
